Bob Skinstad, one of the most recognisable faces in world rugby, has joined the SuperSport.com team and will be informing and entertaining readers with his views, video clips, pictures and live chats.

Bob played 42 times for the Springboks, and played Super 10, 12 and 14 rugby for three franchise teams - the Stormers, Cats and Sharks. He played Currie Cup for Western Province, who won the title three times on his watch.

After a stint in the UK that involved more work than play, Bob capped off a successful comeback to rugby in South Africa with victory at the 2007 RWC, and although he wasn’t a starting XV player, it was still an incredible experience for him.

Bob is an entrepreneur with various interests and a part of the broadcast team at SuperSport. He likes innovative business, which is why he is a perfect fit for new media, and likes to relax by fishing, surfing and raising his family.s

    GO Bokke !

Pieter  De Villiers was right – there isn’t a lot to do in Hamilton, New Zealand – so as part of the Supersport team, we just end up waiting around all day for the match – we eventually found a place to get connected and post this comment but it hasn’t been easy!

The team are geared up and motivated and although it is going to be a dark and even a bit wet, I think we have enough in the tank for a victory here tonight ..

I’m feeling positive and upbeat, and I look forward to winning, celebrating and then heading home to my family !

The All Blacks may have decided on a strategy like take the Springboks on physically on Saturday – but be sure the Springboks will do some thinking of their own, before and during the game.
Big games like today and eg the world cup require big match temperament and ability to think strategically on the day and to change the plan if required. I do not think the All Blacks have the strategic thinking ability on the field to be able to change their game should things not go their way. Brawn yes – brains no.

I think if we play like we were supposed to play, we can win easily and destroy the opposition.
      Positives: Combinations
Full back that can kick (F Steyn), best wing (Habanna), best centre (Fourie), best centre combination (Fourie & de Villiers), best scrum half (du Preez), best scrum and fly half combination (du Preez & M Steyn), best combination (Spies, du Preez & M. Steyn), best lock combination (Matfield & Botha), best line out players (Matfield, Botha, Smith & Spies), best fetcher (Brusouw), best destroyer (Spies), best drop and pole kickers (F. Steyn & M. Steyn), and best players that can play the kicking game (F.Steyn, M. Steyn & du Preez).
Question: How can we lose with a team with all this positives?
      Negatives: Bad choices by PDV
Ndungane (average player), Smit (scrum problem), reserves not on standard (Januarie, Jacobs, Ralepele), Burger (something wrong with him).
I hope that the negatives won’t be an issue today.

I wonder what excuse they’ll have this time – food poisoning, Refs fault, slowing the game down, cheeting at rucks, or maybe we just bored them into losing. Go Bokke!

I think the Springbok now need to run away from all other teams now and win back to back tri nations next year and then on forwards to the world cup. Jake white layed down foundation for this team. thanks again Bob. Oh yes im proud to say I also went Highbury Senior Primary.

(e.g. When a coach like PDV queries the application of the laws by a a referee the respone by Paddie Obrien(Chief referee) is that the interpretation was better than previous games. Referees also claim it is not in the tradition of the game for the public and rugby teams to question the application of laws etc. Come on?- It is a professional game. Look at a football.
It is time to get rid of referee’s who cant be consistent with the application with the laws. It is frustrating the fans who are the paying public and owners of the game, not some pedantic referees.
Why are non rugby players made into referees?
Also now Jaque Fourie has been suspended for 4 weeks and Giteau gets off.

The only aspect that is consistent about referee’s is their inconsistency.
Lets make a public petition and demand a better standard of officials interpreting the game of rugby.

Had Burger or Botha or any of the SA crew air tackled an All Black like they did Habanna there would have been a yellow card at least. As for the Git’s tackle on Fourie – that should have been a red. Consistancy is all we and the players ask for.

Here is the problem. If the siting commissioner is going to re-watch the game and decide to cite a player then he needs to be fair on his calls. The reason they cannot site an All black now is because they would not be available for next week.SANZAR needs to appoint an indepandent crew of Northern Hemisphere ,Argentinian or anyone but a SANZAR country. As for the referee issue – they need training- why are the SA ref’s the only ones asking questions of front rowers to try understand what happens up front. John Smit Slipped in the first scrum -that should have been a reset not a penalty. The ref even admitted that he had slipped. That was plain stupidity or bias – you make the call.

On Saturday I said: Congratulations to the Boks, who managed to hold out and win against 18 men on the field, and despite P de V’s pointless (and dangerous as it turned out) end-game replacement policy.
Now we have this Jacque Fourie citing and suspension. It was probably justified, “but what about all the other incidents?” I hear you cry out, and there were many, the most blatant being the very deliberate shoulder charge on Habana?
Referees are assessed on each game and sanctioned where necessary. Oh really? Then how come they keep re-appearing to make more bad decisions week after week?
I don’t care if the standard is better than it ever was, or if the problem is only apparent now because of television. The days of amateur refs blowing for the love of the game are long gone. They are professionals who are paid an awful lot of money to do a job. So we, the fans who pay their wage at the end of the day, are entitled to expect them to be capable of doing the job right.
If anything, the complaining from the public increases each year. I really think the overall standard, or at least the public and media perception thereof, is going backwards. And it is having a serious negative impact on our enjoyment of the game.
I once asked André Watson why they don’t make match officials’ sanctions public. He replied (rather arrogantly and pointlessly I thought) that they would do so when the players’ sanctions for their mistakes were made public. I am sure you can all see the flaw in this argument, but I shall spell it out, just in case Mr Watson should somehow get to see this article. If a player makes a mistake the side he represents could lose points, or even the game. But the ref supposedly represents neither side. If he makes a mistake the side he errs against could lose points or even the game.
Will we ever be told how match officials’ sanctions work? I doubt it. I have the impression that if one rolled the Klu Klux Klan, the Free Masons and the Broederbond into one, the resultant body would appear transparent compared to the referee’s organisations.
But I’m not just criticising. Here’s my suggestion:
After every match either team can cite any of the professional that officiated in the game. The citings will be judged by a panel independent of the referees’ organisations (all they will need is a rule book and the tapes). The panel will award demerit points against an erring official. It could work much the same way as the demerits you will soon start getting on your driver’s licence. The penalties could vary from being fined a portion of his match fee, to being suspended for a period and even to losing his “whistle and flag licence” should his demerits get up to a certain level.
Will it work? Well when last did you see a player openly throwing a punch in a game? The penalty now is just too great.

Rob Pienaar- I agree whole heatedly that the offiating of Rugby Union is a bit of a desaster at the moment but I don’t think it is intentional and as you say mistakes are overwelming. The fact that after every single test match played these days there is uproar over calls made by the ref (usualy from the losing team)and THIS IS A MAJOR CONCERN. Surely the referees should be asking the question: why is it not possible to ref a game without making more then at least 5 errors?

Being a ref myself for our local club (under 15’s)it is not difficult to ref the game without problems as the game is slower and the spectators more lenient- and this I think is the whole entire point. Test rugby is a specialist proffesional sport. And therefore there should be NO errors when calling the game. These people are hired and trained to offiate games CORRECTLY AND ACCURATELY. The expectations are the highest! The game is the fastest! and at the end of the day, players reputations are at stake.

Maybe it’s time for 2 refs on the field, one on each side of the breakdown and set piece… But I don’t know how this will help the assistant refs (touch judges)- did you see Wayne Barnes call the ball as out after Mulleiena caught the ball first and then slid his foot into touch!! MORE MISTAKES but lets face it he is just a complete idiot!

But I cannot forgive not knowing the rules, or even worse, knowing them and not applying them.
To come back to the shoulder charge. He was told what had happened by the assistant referee, so he knew it was foul play. The laws say that for foul play the offender must be admonished or cautioned AND suspended or sent off. So in terms of the laws he had no choice in the matter – it had to be at least a yellow card.
Another which springs to mind was an off-side call against some of our forwards who were miles away from where the ball was kicked and could not possibly have been regarded as in a position to interfere with play.
One more for luck: He warned the All Blacks for numbers on one of our line-outs. A player retired about a meter away from the lineout and then moved directly back into play as the ball was thrown in. No whistle. How could he possibly not have been aware of that as he had just asked for one player to retire.
I, and I am sure everyone else, do not want to spend our Saturdays with boiling blood. I just want to enjoy a good game of rugby with no aggravation.
I heard AW saying on the radio this week that complaining about the referees is very prevalent in SA, far more so than in other countries. So we have the public complaining about the refs and the refs complaining about the public. Instead why doesn’t Mr Watson do something constructive about it. After all, HE is SARU’s manager of referees.

They have certainly come a long way since Isaak van Heerden was seconded to them as a coach. SA Rugby can be proud indeed for shepherding them from those early days to the point where they are now a powerful force in world rugby.
But why don’t we put a Pacific Islands team in as well and have a true Southern Hemisphere Five Nations.
And while we are at it, shouldn’t we rather add two (or even three or four) sides to the soon to be Super 15? Each of the three Sanzar countries have at least one weaker side in the tournament, and to further dilute the quality of the competition by adding another side from within is just sheer stupidity. Rather take away one side from each and add two each from Argentina and from the Pacific Island Countries.
NZ must now really give up the old fashioned parochial notion that they can treat these island nations as sub sets of their own union and raid them for their own national and Super 14 sides.

Some would have you buy into the argument that the referees have it tough and do not get the credit for how difficult their job is. This is the pinnacle of Rugby and it deserves referees and an IRB who ARE meticulous in their understanding and application of the law. Anything less is bullshit excuses. John Smit tried to smooth things over by making some “nice” comments about referees but Nigel Owens just returned the favour by going after him and the team. Just very petty!

      Bokke:

Much more focussed on a game plan versus worrying about entertaining and getting “flusted” by poor referee calls and blind linesmen. They just played to the way it was called and got on with it. Basically, controlled what they could control. They were at 70% of their potential.

John Smit was focussed and committed to showing up the critics and he did not get bent out of shape by the referee in this game. In Brisbane he was distracted and the Ausies got away with shutting down Fourie D with borderline obstruction. FD had none of that against the AB’s and it made a huge difference. He was back to being “THE GENERAL” scoring an incredible team try. The “rocket launcher” KID nullified the !@#$ give away points from Nigel Owens and effectively kept the Boks in contention. When the players have this edge and they see their Captain unfazed by the referee or anything else other than the game plan then it is a no brainer with this team. They have so much untapped potential and defend and tackle like no other team. Their commitment is far superior to any other team at the moment.

Every player stepped up and made the whole thing so exciting to watch as you just knew that they were on fire and would not concede defeat by allowing the AB’s to gain ascendancy. The KID had a huge role to play in this regard and is without a doubt a “talisman” for this team. John Smit and his pack were like gladiators and proved without doubt why they are the best. The backs were sublime and the centre pairing having no equal. Bryan Habana was outstanding and lucky to walk away without injury in both the “airborne” and “after whistle” incidents. (I discuss this later.)

Ndungane was admirable in place of JP. Bryan missed a crucial tackle late in the game to let the AB’s have a sniff and this was his only blemish in an otherwise stellar performance. Burger and Brussow set about their work mechanically and did not infringe or give away needless penalties. This is the clinical “team approach” we need to build on. No individual heroics, other than the “rocket launcher”, and just plain old gees from the entire team together as one unit. Kanko impressed when coming on with illusive ball in hand play. He will just grow!

I STILL CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE LATE SUBSTITUTIONS WHEN THE AB’s ARE POURING ON THE PRESSURE. UNLESS AN EXISTING PLAYER IS INJURED OR IS PLAYING POORLY THEY ARE MUCH BETTER EQUIPED TO STAY ON AND STEM THE TIDE THAN HAVING FRESH LEGS WHO ARE NOT WARMED UP AND “IN THE GAME”. THIS HAS COST US TEST MATCHES IN THE PAST YET PDV STILL DOES IT?

Bokke – You gave us so much this season and we applaud and thank you for taking your game to the next level. Let’s build into 2010 and then go and defend the world cup with unmatched gees in NZ 2011. We the fans are eternally in your debt for the exponential joy and pride you have given us!

Necessary commentary on Referees and Touch Judges: (Even though we won we cannot ignore what is going here and this is not just one-eyed bullshit!)

After seeing the news this morning that Jacque Fourie is banned for a dangerous tackle I could not help but go down this road. If the NZ Players are not judged equally and also banned it will be a clear indication of the inequalities in the sport. I don’t mean to spoil the dialogue about the players and the win but there is a serious problem with the refereeing, linesmen calls, and judicial hearing process. (I make these statements after watching the game a couple of times and listening to NZ Commentators who are on balance, very fair and call it as it is. They were saying “Oh Boy, Oh Man – How could he call that?” every time Nigel Owens penalized the Boks for something that no one could figure out.)

Here are the points that Carter slotted as gifts from Nigel Owens and that could have derailed the Boks had it not been for John Smit and his team not buying it: (At least 9 perhaps more!)

      1. Opening penalty against Smit – absolutely pathetic, there was no obstruction. (Perhaps from my “one-eyed” Bok Supporter perspective but the NZ commentators and others could find no fault. Clearly Owens was looking for the very first opportunity to penalize the Boks and he just grabbed anything he could to set the tone.)
      2. Scrum where Smit clearly slipped as the front rows met and which Nigel Owens admits on air, for everyone to hear, but still penalizes him. At an early stage of an international I can understand setting the tone against foul play or something deliberate but to give a penalty for a “slip” that you acknowledge as a slip is just idiotic. To give any side 3 free points at this level can cost the game and in the Boks case it clearly could have.
      3. Boks were clearing the ball from their 22 and Nigel Owens penalizes them for the players not being behind the ball kicker. While technically correct it was pathetic in that the AB’s had no advantage taken away with the ball being kicked almost to their try line. The fact the penalty was again called in our 22 and such easy points basically given to Carter, underscores how Nigel Owens intent was clearly focussed on penalizing the Boks for anything he could find no matter how marginal.

There is no doubt, and validated by NZ Commentators and others, that the Boks are given a completely different set of rules than any other team. The fact that John Smit did not get distracted this time shows how fantastic he is as a leader. He just moved on and executed the game plan without letting Nigel Owens ruin the game.

Here are factual infringements that if committed by a Springbok player would have automatically, as we have seen, resulted in at minimum a yellow card or even a red. Definitely a suspension and ban would have followed each.

      1. Joe Rokocoko for making contact with Bryan Habana in the air. While called “innocent” and receiving a penalty this could have resulted in a serious injury for Bryan. Watch the replays and see how hard he lands! If Nigel Owens was looking to be fair, a yellow card would have been appropriate. I will put my head on a block that if that was a Springbok, Nigel Owens would have pulled the yellow card without a blink of the eye. I have seen no suspension/ban in the media and if Judicial officer Paul Tully said after reviewing video evidence and hearing submissions that Jaque Fourie’s tackle had been “clearly dangerous and placed the player in a vulnerable position when he landed on his neck and shoulder”, then how does the way Bryan landed differ? You cannot interfere with a player in the air under any circumstance, innocent or not!!!
      2. Kieran Read for a blatant shoulder charge on Habana, after the whistle. Again, how does this differ in degree of danger that may have occurred if Bryans face had collected Kieran’s shoulder and his cheek bone was shattered. This should at minimum have been a yellow card. If citing commissioners are going to go after the Boks post the game and ban them, then dish out the same to any other team. Kieran was being a total prick and again if this was a Springbok you know exactly what would have happened!
      3. Preceisely 16min and 48 sec into the game at 6 all, Brad Thorn #4 rips The Best around the Neck and twists & dumps him viciously into the ground with his full weight and force. Watch the replay of this and notice that it is completely off the ball. Neither Nigel Owens nor the linesmen bothered to even acknowledge this right in front of their eyes. This was an extremely dangerous clean out and way more dangerous than that of Bakkies Botha for which he was severely dealt with and the Boks fined for wearing the white armbands in solidarity. You cannot tell me that this clean out was legal. (Will the citing commissioner deal with Thorn? Somehow I doubt it when they let him get away with his spear tackle on John Smit a while back. John showed Brad how to do it clean and hard the legal way in this game and it was magnificent to see him execute a text book punishing tackle. Our school boys should play this one over and over as a perfect example of timing, technique and execution. Nothing like the leader to show how it should be done!)

These are just 3 incidents, not to say the Boks are angels, but let’s be fair here guys! I hope these guys are disciplined as our boys are discipline otherwise what is the IRB saying?

      Closing Comments:

Nothing but praise for PDV, the Coaching Team, and the players! Best team ever even if it was not a clean sweep. No other team has ever achieved as much and under so much pressure and unfair targeting. For the first time in history for any rugby nation the Springbooks own the World Cup, Tri-Nations, B&I Lions, Super 14, and Sevens titles all in 2009.
Absolutely exceptional and we need to be humbled by the dedication and commitment of all the players and their respective structures for this achievement. Not even the mighty AB’s have ever achieved this feet.
Perhaps we may receive some respect from the IRB – somehow I doubt it so we just need to do it again and again until they have no choice!
      Viva Bokke!

The Currie Cup is in high gear and the Bok players will beef up their respective teams upon return. I am personally looking forward to the Sharks winning it and that will be just perfect for me!!

Best Regards and thanks for the opportuntiy to blog and have a voice out here in cyberspace.

Yes it does sound a bit like a conspiricy theory but the ruth is if Bakkies or Schalk shoulder charged one of their players AFTER THE WHISTLE they would have been off!
Bakkies Botha clean-out of Adam Jone. Mat Giteau’s near decapitation of Fourie Duprie. Andrew Sheridan’s punch at Andries Bekker groin (TWICE)- the only reason he did it twice because he got away with it the first time…

The list goes on. Anyway what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger so maybe we should thank them because we’ve beaten everyone in front of us.!

Nice job Boks but we need a level playing field.
